A lower bound for approximating the geometric minimum weight matching

چکیده
Given a set S of 2n points in R d , a perfect matching of S is a set of n edges such that each point of S is a vertex of exactly one edge. The weight of a perfect matching is the sum of the Euclidean lengths of all edges. Rao and Smith have recently shown that there is a constant r > 1, that only depends on the dimension d, such that a perfect matching whose weight is less than or equal to r times the weight of a minimum weight perfect matching can be computed in O(n log n) time. We show that this algorithm is optimal in the algebraic computation tree model.

The Structure of Bhattacharyya Matrix in Natural Exponential Family and Its Role in Approximating the Variance of a Statistics
In most situations the best estimator of a function of the parameter exists, but sometimes it has a complex form and we cannot compute its variance explicitly. Therefore, a lower bound for the variance of an estimator is one of the fundamentals in the estimation theory, because it gives us an idea about the accuracy of an estimator. It is well-known in statistical inference that the Cram&eac...

Lower Bound. Adrian Vetta Abstract We present a 32 -approximation algorithm for the problem of nding a minimum strongly connected spanning subgraph in a given directed graph. As a corollary we obtain a 3 2 -approximation algorithm for the more general minimum equivalent digraph problem. The performance of our algorithm is measured against a lower bound obtained from a simple matching problem. T...
متن کاملMinimum Weight Euclidean Matching and Weighted Relative Neighborhood Graphs
The Minimum Weight Euclidean Matching (MWEM) problem is: given 2n point sites in the plane with Euclidean metric for interpoint distances, match the sites into n pairs so that the sum of the n distances between matched pairs is minimized. The graph theoretic version of this problem has been extensively studied since the pioneering work of Edmonds. The best time bound known for MEWM is O(n 2:5 (...
متن کاملApproximating the Minimum Spanning Tree Weight in Sublinear Time
We present a probabilistic algorithm that, given a connected graph G (represented by adjacency lists) of average degree d, with edge weights in the set {1, . . . , w}, and given a parameter 0 < ε < 1/2, estimates in time O(dwε log dw ε ) the weight of the minimum spanning tree of G with a relative error of at most ε. Note that the running time does not depend on the number of vertices in G. We ...
متن کاملQuasi - Greedy Triangulations Approximating
This paper settles the following two longstanding open problems: 1. What is the worst-case approximation ratio between the greedy and the minimum weight triangulation? 2. Is there a polynomial time algorithm that always produces a triangulation whose length is within a constant factor from the minimum? The answer to the rst question is that the known (p n) lower bound is tight. The second quest...
